Functionalizing graphene

New methods for epitaxial growth of graphene - resulting in coherent grapheme extending over macroscopic areas - were developed in the physics department. The peculiar electronic properties not only of graphene but also of surface states of topological insulators are described by Dirac equations. After carefully investigating structural and electronic properties of the Dirac material graphene, the focus has shifted to an exploration of methods to functionalize epitaxial graphene by adsorption, intercalation, and purposefully generation of defects. Newly emerging magnetic and adsorption properties are investigated theoretically and experimentally in the physics department in collaboration with the Research Center Jülich and international partners.
